Hydro Aluminium Porsgrunn is a key contributor to R&D within Hydro’s Hall-Héroult process activities. Its work covers a broad range of areas, including modelling, CO₂ capture and storage, waste management and treatment, sustainability, and testing of relining materials. These activities are supported by a well-equipped laboratory with extensive capabilities for materials testing and characterization. Hydro Aluminium Porsgrunn also serves as Hydro’s central laboratory for alumina and fluoride quality assurance and control.

Norsk Hydro established its research centre at Herøya in 1961. For many years it was Norway's largest private research centre. The site has since developed into today's Herøya Research Park, where Hydro continues its long tradition of industrial research and technology development.
Hydro Aluminium Porsgrunn is situated at Herøya Research Park, building 92 with facilities covering three office-floors, laboratories and test facility.
