The project signifies the beginning of a larger cleanup process in the former magnesium zone. The cleared areas will be released to a tenant in need of more space.

Important milestone

The contractor, NRC Kept, has already made significant progress in demolishing Building 279, which previously served as a workshop and charging station for vehicles.

The transport tunnel for vehicles part of Building 107, is also included in the project. The goal is to complete this first phase by the end of September.

“This is an important milestone in our long-term efforts to develop and prepare the industrial park's areas for future needs,” says Skjalg Aasland, head of Marketing and business development at Herøya Industripark AS.

“We have been working on various plans for these areas for quite some time, and it’s great that we can finally start with the demolition and preparation for new activities."

Exceeding environmental goals

Herøya Industripark AS has defined environmental goals for its activities. The construction site will be set up to ensure effective waste sorting, with a goal of a minimum 80% sorting rate and a maximum waste amount of 40 kg/m². For rehabilitation and demolition projects, a reuse assessment is to be conducted in the early stages, along with setting targets for the proportion of materials to be reused.

“This demolition project has a target sorting rate of 97.7%. An estimated 3,334 tonnes of concrete will be reused. The concrete will be crushed and repurposed as levelling material when the site is rebuilt,” says Ingunn Edvardsen Saga, HRP AS, project manager for Herøya Industripark AS.

"The demolition project is progressing as planned, and we are well on our way to achieving the high environmental goals we have set. We look forward to completing this phase by autumn and beginning to prepare the area for the tenant."
